My name is Noreen Donovan and I am a Ph.D. student in Clinical Psychology at Suffolk University.  I am looking for mothers with sons on the autism spectrum ages 3-6.  I am interested in mothers' experience with reading picture books with their young children.  In addition, I am interested in exploring the use of video training in storytelling.  Participation includes two short home visits within one month (1/2 hour each).  During the home vists, mothers will read a story (to be provided) with their children and complete a questionnaire.  Sessions will be videotaped.  Participants will receive a $10.00 gift card to Barns & Noble Bookseelser.  For more information, please contact Noreen Donovan:  noreen.donovan@suffolk.edu or call 617-543-3957.

Children ages 9-11 Needed to Participate

We are beginning a study called "The Detection Study" to examine how young chyildren ages 9-11 years search for information in complex scenes and how attention may help them search.  We wish to examine how autism affects visual attention and will compare typically developing children with children who have been diagnosed with autism.  Participation in the study will involve ont to two visits to our laboratory at the Shriver Center in Waltham.  In the first visit your child would complete a series of standarized assessments.  Based on this information we weill determine whether he or she meets the specific qualifications for the study.  If so, we wil then schedule a second visit to return and comkplete the experimental task.  In the experimental tast, we use behavioral measures like speed of responses and locatio of eye gaze.  Children will watch a computer screen that flickers between two versions of a cokplex scene and are asked to identify what element of the scene changes in the two versions.  It is a fun and interactive task that children as young as 6 can perform and enjoy.  Our study participans receive copensation for their time and a small gift and are free to particiate in as many studies as they qualify for.  Children and their parents are invited to come to our laboratory at the Shriver Center in Waltham, which is reachable by pulic transporation and has ample free parking.  To learn more about participating in "The Detection Study" or for more information about other studies in our laboratory, please contact us at 781-642-0260 or email to PDL@umassmed.edu or visit our website at http://users.umassmed.edu/teresa.mitchell/
